ABOUT OURISMAN

After consistently being a top sales person for two years at a Chevrolet dealership on Connecticut Avenue in Washington D.C., Benjamin Ourisman opened his own dealership on H Street in 1921. His business thrived, even in the midst of the Depression. By 1940, Benjamin had expanded into a 5 story building with the country's highest sales of Chevrolets. Soon he opened a new dealership, Mandel Chevrolet, after his son, in Anacostia.

During World War II, automotive production was stopped, so Benjamin Ourisman began serving his country. He earned the rank of Colonel during his time with the United States Army. His business being at a standstill, he gave the H Street business to the Navy for use during wartime. Upon his return and being granted his building back from the Federal Government, Benjamin began the process of rebuilding his business in the face of high demand and production delays. Demand became so high, that 67 new salesmen had to be hired to keep up.

Mandell Ourisman, Benjamin's son, took over the operations of the two dealerships upon his fathers passing in 1955. He moved forward, continuing his father's success, with both locations until 1962, when he combined operations into a single location in Marlow Heights. This new location achieved almost overnight success, causing 2 miles long traffic jams in the then rural locale. A nurse even had to be hired to provide childcare while their parents bought their new Chevys or serviced them with the shop!

Since the opening of the Marlow Heights location, our business has only continued to grow. Operations were expanded by Mandell's sons, John, Robert, and step-son Dan to more than 20 dealerships in 16 locations.

We've now been a fixture in the DMV for 100 years and hope you'll join our family in celebrating our anniversary and looking forward to 100 more!
